Saxbys (a Philadelphia-based Certified B Corp), B Lab (a nonprofit network and creator of the Benefit Corporation Certification), and community activist Ya Fav Trashman, Terrill Haigler, are coming together to host a service day to benefit the Point Breeze community on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

“At Saxbys, we are committed to serving the communities we live and work in,” said Nick Bayer, Founder & CEO of Saxbys. “With our Roastery located in Point Breeze, we are grateful for the opportunity to give back and support the community through this event.”

Dedicated to their community by ensuring that food is shared and not wasted, the morning will kickoff with a grocery distribution, courtesy of Sharing Excess. Through their partnerships with grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers, and farmers, they’re able to redistribute nearly 120,000 pounds of food every week.

During the distribution, community attendees will also be able to apply to Philadelphia Gas Works’ LIHEAP program, which helps pay off the balance of eligible utility bills, or assist with a heating emergency. Based off household size and income, grants of up to $1,000 are available and do not have to be repaid.

To wrap up the day, Philadelphia-based Five Below’s donation of more than 2,000 toys will ensure the holidays will shine even brighter for some of the youngest stars in the Point Breeze community. Students from kindergarten through grade 8 from Delaplaine McDaniel School and the surrounding community are all invited to come by for a toy giveaway, which will feature an assortment of special gifts. Ingrained in the company’s ethos, Five Below consistently finds ways to make their communities better.

“Getting resources into the community is of the utmost importance year-round, and especially during the holidays,” said Haigler. “Working alongside Saxbys and B Lab helps to deepen our collective impact on the community.”

All community members are invited and encouraged to join the event on Tuesday, November 29, which will be held at the Saxbys Roastery at 2415 Morris Street. The grocery distribution will run from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the toy giveaway from 2 to 4 p.m. (while supplies last).
